New Article: Helping New Managers Work Effectively with the Boss

Impact Achievement Group article series on new manager training emphasizes key strategies to grow into management

SEATTLE – April 28, 2010 – Effective managers understand the importance of developing a good relationship with their boss. Companies that provide new managers with the right strategies to navigate this relationship will also benefit, according to Impact Achievement Group.

The boss is the person with the greatest control over new managers' success. How well those new supervisors manage that relationship will have a critical impact on their career aspirations and effectiveness.

Human resources can play a key role by providing training and strategies that help managers become an effective resource for their boss.

"Working with the Boss: How HR Can Prepare New Managers," the fourth article in a 12-part series, discusses ways new managers can effectively work with their superiors, such as using the boss as a sounding board, learning the boss’ preferences and avoiding making extra work for the boss. The articles are derived from Supervisory Basics, 12 individual yet linked two-hour training modules, delivered in leader-led or eLearning formats that helps managers understand the management behaviors and tactics required to ensure their and their company's success.

New managers who want to impress their boss do best by running ideas or decisions by them, and are prepared with ready solutions and open to feedback. They can benefit by receiving immediate coaching from their boss, and can be assured that they are on the right track and have their boss's support. There are also other reasons to hold back on making changes or suggestions.

"New managers have no management credibility with their boss, nor do they understand how and why decisions are made in the organization," said Lee Klepinger, president. "Additionally, their boss might have created what they want to change."

Those newly promoted should also avoid passing the monkey - making extra work for the boss. The consequences are serious, with the boss becoming frustrated with and losing confidence in the new manager. When the boss does the majority of the work, a dependent relationship emerges, which stunts the development of the manager in his new role.
