Impact Achievement Group Article Advises New Managers on Effective Delegation

Leadership development firm's article series on new manager training emphasizes key strategies to grow into management

SEATTLE – December 21, 2010 – Learning to effectively delegate appropriate tasks and prevent upward delegation are critical components of successful management. A new article by Impact Achievement Group gives new managers actionable tips for successfully assigning work tasks.

“Initiative, Personal Responsibility, and Delegation,” the twelfth in a 12-part article series, gives new supervisors practical tools to develop employee performance. The articles are derived from Supervisory Basics™, 12 individual yet linked two-hour training modules, delivered in leader-led or eLearning formats that help managers understand the management behaviors and tactics required to ensure their and their company's success.

Managers are responsible for doing their own work and also for managing the work of others. New managers who fail to delegate appropriately can easily find themselves doing for employees what the employees can and should be doing for themselves. The article warns against this “upward delegation” and suggests appropriate responses to help employees become independent and self-accountable, breaking the typical cycle of dependency on the manager.

The article addresses which tasks should not be delegated, along with a six-step process for delegation:

  • Be as specific as possible about the task to be done.
  • Provide clarity about deadlines for completion.
  • Provide any necessary authority required to get the assignment done.
  • Ensure the employee has access to you for assistance.
  • Provide specific follow-up when the assignment is lengthy.
  • Provide feedback on performance when the assignment is completed.

“A manager's ability to create employee initiative and delegate effectively is a hallmark of being a great leader,” said Lee Klepinger, president of IAG. “However, new managers often continue being “doers” rather than establishing their leadership role and creating developmental opportunities for their employees. That’s where specific training can help new managers accelerate their effectiveness.”
